Jason Collins became the first active player in major sports to come out of the closet and announce he is gay. For the full Sports Illustrated article click here. The sports community and entire community has come to support Jason him on this historic announcement. One of the most powerful statements in this article was his reason to wear number 98, “The number has great significance to the gay community. One of the most notorious antigay hate crimes occurred in 1998. Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student, was kidnapped, tortured and lashed to a prairie fence. He died five days after he was finally found. That same year the Trevor Project was founded. This amazing organization provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention to kids struggling with their sexual identity. Trust me, I know that struggle. I’ve struggled with some insane logic. When I put on my jersey I was making a statement to myself, my family and my friends.”

Do you think this will be the first step for acceptance or for more homophobic reactions in the sports community?

NFL Draft Recap

Thoughts on the NFL Draft

The three days of the NFL draft are now over and here is my take on the draft class for both New York teams.

New York Giants

Big Blue does what it does best; drafting big linemen with their first three picks to win the battle in the trenches. The picks of OT Justin Pugh (19), DT Johnathan Hankins (49), and DE Damontre Moore (81) add youth and size to this roster.  One of the biggest surprises and value picks was the Giants trading up in the fourth round to grab QB Ryan Nassib. Nassib was projected as one of the top QB’s in the draft. I love this pick! The rest of day three included S Copper Taylor (152), OG Eric Herman (225) and almost ‘Mr. Irrelevant” RB Michael Cox. GM jerry Reese, known for his talent evaluation, has added some youth and size to this solid roster. They may have also found the heir apparent to Eli Manning. But as Reese says on Nassib, “Yeah, if he doesn’t ever play, that would be great.”

DRAFT GRADE – B+

New York Jets

The circus has now six rings! Gang Green was at it again, making a splash on day two of the draft with the selection of QB Geno Smith (39). I think it’s all about perspective, what would the reaction be if the Jets selected him at number 9 or 13? Overall, Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, David Gerrard, Greg McElroy, and Matt Simms aren’t the answer. Is Geno Smith? Who knows, but why not take a shot! First time GM John Idzik is now making this his team. The Jets filled some need positions (even though all positions on this roster were in need) by filling a CB void with the trade of Derelle Revis, with the selection of CB Dee Milliner (9). Four picks later Jets Nation welcomed DT Sheldon Richardson (13) and in day two and three filled some need on both sides of the lines with G Brian Winters(72), OL Oday Aboushi (141), and OL William Campbell (178). FB Tommy Bohanon (215) was selected in the seventh round filling a need at the fullback position. Let the Broadway Geno era begin!

DRAFT GRADE – B-

Overall, let’s see how this draft pans out in the next three years. However, I feel that both New York teams addressed some key needs and added some flare in the process. Let’s not forget the undrafted free agent period has begun and there will be some special folks to come out of that process as well (think Kurt Waner, Wes Welker, James Harrison, Priest Holmes, Jeff Saturday and Warren Moon) . Will the Giants or Jets develop any? Only time will tell.

Geno Smith is still in the NFL Draft green room truly a lonely spot to be in this late in the first round. Some words of encouragement from another NFL Draft green room loner…
