Sunday’s New York State of Mind

Sunday definitely put us locals in a New York State of Mind! The Knicks won it’s 12th straight, the Yanks shut down the Detroit Tigers, and the Mets rallied a win against the Miami Marlins. There’s no better place to be when the locals are winning then New York City! So why was Sunday so special? The Yanks scored 7 runs against the Tigers and Justin Verlander to a final score of 7-0. Verlander pitched 7 1/3, allowing seven hits, three runs, two walks, while striking out four. CC Sabathia out dueled his counterpart going for a scoreless 7 with four hits, three walks, and struck out four. The Yankee bats came alive with Francisco Cervelli going 2-4 and driving in two and Jayson Nix going 3-4 with a homer.

Back in Queens, the Mets scratched their way back to get a 4-3 win over the Marlins. The Mets were silenced by top Marlin 20-year old prospect Jose Fernandez for the first five innings surrendering three hits, one run, one walk, and striking out eight. Once Martinez was out of the game the Mets capitalized on the Marlins bullpen scoring three unanswered, capped by the two-run walk off single by Marlon Byrd.

The biggest win on Sunday came from the New York Knicks, who won their 12th straight against Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder with a final score 125-120. The Knicks were lead by Carmelo Anthony’s 36pts and 12 boards and JR Smith’s 22pts and two key three-pointers. Russel Westbrook lead OKC with 37pts, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists. If Anthony and Smith continue to play at this pace and with the likely return of Kenyon Martin, Kurt Thomas, and Amare Stoudemire, the Knicks could find themselves deep in the playoffs.

What a great day to be in a New York State of Mind!
