Melo Domination, Playoffs and Beyond

Posted: April 9, 2013 by Ndiggy in Knicks, NBA

Being a Knicks fan the last ten years plus has been pretty dreadful.  Hopeless fans would flock to MSG to watch a sorry excuse for an NBA team show up to work every night.  Then on February 21, 2011 the franchise made a blockbuster trade for Carmelo Anthony, one of the top three scorers in the NBA.  The buzz around the city and the team became apparent immediately.  He alone resurrected the hopes and dreams of die hard Knicks fans everywhere.  The playoffs became a realistic goal to obtain and was no longer a fantasy because of this one exceptional player.

Melo is having arguably one of his best years statistically averaging 28.4 points a game.  But the way he is dominating games lately shows just why he is one of the best scorers in the league.  The last 4 games he’s averaging 41.8 points a game while shooting 61% from the field and a ridiculous 56% from three point land.  It’s definitely the best he’s looked all season and is coming at just  the right time with the playoffs 2 weeks away.  He’s scoring from the inside and outside and is looking unstoppable doing so.

The Miami Heat have quietly been the dominant favorite in the eastern conference.  The Knicks have been between the 2nd and 3rd seed all season long.  But they are the hottest team in the NBA right now riding a 12 game winning streak.  This is the first time they have reached the 50 win plateau since the 1999-2000 season.  The chemistry on the team looks great with Carmelo Anthony and JR Smith both playing amazing basketball.  If you asked any knowledgeable basketball fan 3 weeks ago if New York had any chance at beating Miami in the playoffs they would of said no way.  But things feel a little different lately and if Melo can continue his torrid play since coming back from getting his knee drained then the Knicks might just have a chance.

Although the team has made the playoffs the last 2 years, they have been dominated.  In 2011  they were swept by the Boston Celtics in the first round and in last years playoffs were ousted in 5 games by the Miami Heat.  This season is very different and definitely has the highest expecatations of New Yorkers since Melo has arrived.  Everyone assumes they will get through first round regardless of who they end up playing.  Then will most likely have a tough task at hand at playing Indiana the second round, a team they had difficulty with during the regular season.  But if they can overcome that they will face Lebron and his talents he brought to South Beach with the rest of the Heat.  It all rides on Carmelo Anthony how far these Knicks can go.  He’s been dominating lately riding in to the playoffs, and hopefully he takes the team beyond.

Cinderella in the Tourney

Wichita State is in the final four!!!   They ain’t called the Shockers for nothing.  People love seeing underdogs win because it’s unexpected and real fans hate seeing the favorites win unless it happens to be their own team.  This is the beauty of March madness and why so many people get excited about the tournament year after year.  With a one game elimination anything can happen and often times anything does happen.  In other professional sports like basketball, baseball and hockey there are long drawn out series where the better team normally wins.  The one game do or die scenario adds so much more excitement to just watching a game as a sports fan. The only sport we get this in is football and since the lights are out in all stadiums not just New Orleans we must wait until September.  But for now we still have a few more games left in the tournament and a Cinderella in Wichita State.  I know who I’m rooting for in the dirty south next week, and if your team isn’t in the final four or you have no shot at winning your bracket then I know who your rooting for too.
