Dear Roger Godell…

Dear Mr. Godell,

I’m a die-hard football fan, a New York Jets fan, but that is neither here nor there. I have one question for you. What has the NFL become? You have done so much to improve parity in this sport, build a brand, and create buzz that us fans can’t wait till voluntary workouts and training camp.

But, what are you doing to address the criminality in your sport?

There have been twenty-three arrests of NFL players, since the Super Bowl. Twenty-three arrests until the major first degree murder charge and five counts of gun charges against Aaron Hernandez. On the same day, Ausar Walcott, a rookie, is charged with attempted murder for punching a man outside a club and yesterday the arrest of Joe Lefegad, an Indianapolis Colt, for gun charges. It seems that your sport cannot get out of the news, but for all the wrong reasons. There are over 1,600 players in the NFL (which also include 5 players on practice squads). Major League Baseball can host similar numbers with over 1,300 in the majors and an exponential number in all their minor league affiliates. So why do we hear so much more about the NFL and the situations these players get themselves into over MLB players?

You have a bunch of criminals in your sport, that’s the bottom line. But do we give them a shot because of the violent nature of the sport? Do we not care because the facemasks hide their real identity? But Mr. Godell, what are you doing about this? I’m sure you care. What answers do you have to help these young players move past their criminal backgrounds, their gang affiliations, and fascination with guns? Your rookie symposium just doesn’t seem to work. What punishments, suspensions, and fines will you impose to make this criminal lifestyle less of the focus in the NFL?

I am concerned. I am more concerned that the dollar and cents outweigh the moral dilemmas of right and wrong. I am concerned that win at all costs really means win with the running back that has two gun charges and the safety with a cache of automatic weapons in my starting lineup over the undrafted free agent who will give his all just to make the practice squad. These are some of my concerns.

What are yours Mr. Godell? But more importantly, I ask you again, what are doing about the criminality in your sport?

Sincerely,

B

NFL Draft Recap

Thoughts on the NFL Draft

The three days of the NFL draft are now over and here is my take on the draft class for both New York teams.

New York Giants

Big Blue does what it does best; drafting big linemen with their first three picks to win the battle in the trenches. The picks of OT Justin Pugh (19), DT Johnathan Hankins (49), and DE Damontre Moore (81) add youth and size to this roster.  One of the biggest surprises and value picks was the Giants trading up in the fourth round to grab QB Ryan Nassib. Nassib was projected as one of the top QB’s in the draft. I love this pick! The rest of day three included S Copper Taylor (152), OG Eric Herman (225) and almost ‘Mr. Irrelevant” RB Michael Cox. GM jerry Reese, known for his talent evaluation, has added some youth and size to this solid roster. They may have also found the heir apparent to Eli Manning. But as Reese says on Nassib, “Yeah, if he doesn’t ever play, that would be great.”

DRAFT GRADE – B+

New York Jets

The circus has now six rings! Gang Green was at it again, making a splash on day two of the draft with the selection of QB Geno Smith (39). I think it’s all about perspective, what would the reaction be if the Jets selected him at number 9 or 13? Overall, Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, David Gerrard, Greg McElroy, and Matt Simms aren’t the answer. Is Geno Smith? Who knows, but why not take a shot! First time GM John Idzik is now making this his team. The Jets filled some need positions (even though all positions on this roster were in need) by filling a CB void with the trade of Derelle Revis, with the selection of CB Dee Milliner (9). Four picks later Jets Nation welcomed DT Sheldon Richardson (13) and in day two and three filled some need on both sides of the lines with G Brian Winters(72), OL Oday Aboushi (141), and OL William Campbell (178). FB Tommy Bohanon (215) was selected in the seventh round filling a need at the fullback position. Let the Broadway Geno era begin!

DRAFT GRADE – B-

Overall, let’s see how this draft pans out in the next three years. However, I feel that both New York teams addressed some key needs and added some flare in the process. Let’s not forget the undrafted free agent period has begun and there will be some special folks to come out of that process as well (think Kurt Waner, Wes Welker, James Harrison, Priest Holmes, Jeff Saturday and Warren Moon) . Will the Giants or Jets develop any? Only time will tell.

So who are the New York Giants and New York Jets taking in the first round? Giants taking Man’ti? Will the Jets trade the 13th pick for a a couple of picks? Only time will tell…It’s draft night at Radio City!

It seems as if Revis will be headed to Tampa before the draft on Thursday.
